CyberNexora

PDPL security audit

Overview

This is a sample case study that demonstrates how CyberNexora conducts a website security audit for a UAE-based business. Client details are anonymised, and the findings shown here represent the type of vulnerabilities commonly discovered during a real assessment. The goal: identify security weaknesses before attackers do, and map them to UAE PDPL data-protection requirements.

The Challenge

A UAE-based e-commerce business needed to confirm whether its website was secure and PDPL-compliant. The site handled customer personal data — names, addresses, phone numbers, and order history — but had never undergone a professional security audit.

Key concerns:

  • Was customer data exposed to unauthorised access?
  • Did the site meet PDPL’s technical security requirements?
  • Were there vulnerabilities that could lead to a data breach?

Our Approach

CyberNexora followed a structured methodology based on the OWASP Top 10 and PTES (Penetration Testing Execution Standard):

  1. Scoping — defined the assets and boundaries of the test
  2. Reconnaissance — mapped the application and its entry points
  3. Vulnerability Assessment — identified security weaknesses
  4. Manual Penetration Testing — safely validated real exploitability
  5. Risk Scoring — rated each finding using CVSS
  6. Reporting — delivered clear findings with remediation steps
  7. Re-test — verified fixes after remediation (free)

Key Findings

Finding Severity PDPL Impact
Broken Access Control Critical Customer data exposure
Missing encryption on sensitive data Critical PDPL technical measure failure
Weak authentication / no MFA High Account takeover risk
Security misconfiguration High Exposed admin endpoints
Outdated components with known CVEs Medium Exploitable known flaws
Insufficient logging & monitoring Medium Breach detection gap

Total: 14 findings — 3 Critical, 5 High, 6 Medium.

The Result

Every finding was documented with a CVSS risk score, proof-of-concept evidence, and clear remediation steps. The business fixed the critical and high-severity issues first, then CyberNexora performed a free re-test to confirm the fixes worked.

Outcome:

  • All 3 critical vulnerabilities remediated
  • Customer data access properly restricted
  • Site aligned with PDPL technical security requirements
  • Documented evidence of testing for compliance and client audits

Why It Matters

Under UAE PDPL, businesses must implement appropriate technical measures to protect personal data — with fines reaching up to AED 5 million for violations. A website security audit provides documented proof that those measures were tested and work. This is exactly the kind of assessment that protects a business from both attackers and regulatory penalties.
